Translation of Durga Chalisa in English

I bow to You O Goddess Durga, the bestower of happiness!
I bow to You O Goddess Amba, who Ends all miseries.

The radiance of your light is limitless and all pervading and all the three
realms (Earth, Heaven And the Nether World) are enlightened by Thee.

Your face is like the moon and mouth very huge. Your eyes shine with a
red glow and You have a Frightening frown.

O Mother! Your look is enchanting, the very sight of which ensures welfare
of the devout.

All the powers of the World repose in Thee and it is You who provide food and
wealth for the World’s survival.

Like the feeding Mother Annapoorna, You nurture the whole universe and You are
the one Who appear like the timeless Bala Sundari (young girl of extreme beauty).

At the time of dissolution, it is You, O Mother, who destroys everything. You are the
beloved Consort of Lord Shiva, Gauri (Parvati).

Lord Shiva and all yogis always chant your praise Brahma,
Vishnu and all other Gods ever meditate on You.

You appear in the form of Goddess Saraswati too,
to grant wisdom to the sages and thus ensure their Welfare.

O Mother Amba! It was You who appeared in the form
of Narsimha, sundering the pillar.

Thus You saved Prahlad and Hiranyakashyap also went to
Heaven as he was killed by your Hands.

In the form of Goddess Lakshmi, O Mother, you appear in
this world and repose by the side of Shree Narayan.

Dwelling in the ocean of milk, O Goddess, with Lord Vishnu,
please fulfill my desires.

O Bhavani, the famous Goddess of Hingalaja is no one else but
You Yourself. Illimitable is your Glory, defying description.

You are yourself Matangi and Dhoomavati Mata. It is You who appear as
Bhuvaneshwari and Bagalamukhi Devi to bestow happiness to all.

It is You who redeem the wolrd, appearing in the form of Shree Bhairavi,
Taradevi and Chhinnamasta Devi, and end its sorrows.

Reposing gracefully uopn your vehicle, O Goddess Bhavani, You are welcome
by the brave Langour (Lord Hanuman).

When You appear in the form of Goddess Kali, with sword in one hand and a
cupel in the other, Even Time flees in panic.

Beholding You, well armed, with a Trident in your hand, the enemy’s
heart aches with the sting Of fear.

You also repose in the form of Devi at Nagarkot in Kangara. Thus all the
three realms shudder in the might of your glory.

You slayed the demons like Shumbh & Nishumb and massacred the
thousand forms of the dreaded Demon Raktabeej.

When the earth was severely distressed bearing the load of the sins
of the arrogant Mahishasur.

You assumed the dreadful form of Goddess Kali and
massacred him along with his army.

Thus, whenever the noble saints were distressed,
it is You O Mother, who came to their rescue.

All the realms including the Amarpuri (divine realm) remain
sorrow-less and happy by Your Grace. O Goddess!

It is the symbol of Your glory that is burning brightly at Shree JwalaJi.
All me and women Ever worship You, O Mother!

He who sings Your glory with devotion, love, and sincerity remains
beyond the reach of grief And poverty.

He who meditates upon Your form with concentration goes
beyond the cycle of births and deaths.

All the yogis, gods and sages openly declare that without your
favour one can’t establish communion with God.

Shankaracharya had performed once a special penance called
Aacharaj and by virtue of which he had subdued his anger and desire.

He ever worshipped Lord Shankar and never for a moment
concentrated his mind on You.

Since He did not realise your immense glory, all His powers
waned and then He repented hitherto.

Then He sought refuge in You, chanted Your glory and
‘victory, victory, victory to Thee, O Jagadamba Bhavani’.

Then, O Primal Goddess Jagadamba Ji, You were propitiated and
in no time You bestowed Him with his lost powers.

O Mother! Severe afflictions distress me and no one except Your
Honoured Self can provide relief please end my afflictions.

Hopes and longings ever torture me. All sorts of passions and
lust ever torment my heart.

O Goddess Bhavani! I meditate only upon you Please
kill my enemies O Queen!

O Merciful Mother! Show me your favour and make me feel
happy by bestowing me with all sorts of riches and powers.

O Mother! May I be receptable of Your grace as long as I live,
ever recounting the feats of Your Glory to all.

This way, whoever sings this Durga Chalisa shall ever enjoy all
sorts of pleasures and shall attain the highest state in the end.

Various festivals observed at the holy shrine of Maa Tarini. There is also a daily ritual or Puja observed at the holy shrine of Maa too. Everyday number of devotees come to the holy shrine of Maa to offer their love and Puja to Maa. Tuesday and Saturday in every week observed as the day of Maa so more number of devotees come on that day. One interesting fact is there is no priest or Brahmin in Maa’s temple to offer puja for you. The puja offered by DEHURI a tribal group at the temple of Maa for you. You will find below a brief description of daily rituals and major festivals observed at the holy shrine of Maa.

Observance of Daily Rituals

Maa’s Temple open for Darshan for all her devotees at a specified time every day and devotees are allowed to offer DARSHAN during that time. Find below the opening times of the Temple of Maa.

From April to September 6 AM to 1 PM and from 3.30 PM to 8 PM
From October to March 7 AM to 1.30 PM and from 3 PM to 7.30 PM

After the opening of the temple to till the close of the temple the following rituals observed daily at the shrine of Maa.

Abaskasha (The Morning Puja)

Maa’s ritual begins at 6 AM daily morning at 6 AM. MAA first takes her birth every morning. Before the bath ritual of MAA the goddess idol was pasted with turmeric , Chua (kind of rough oil) and sandal paste. Then water is poured on MAA to complete the ritual of Bath. Then the Puja begins with lots of Ghantas (Bells), Aarti and is completed by the daily bhoga (Ukhudaa beaten rice which is famous in Orissa), coconut, Bananas and other sweets.

Maa is the holiest word in all the scriptures whether it is Vedas, Puranas, Bible, Koran, Guran Granth or in modern terminology. The originator of every thing is Maa. Even Lord Krishna had to take help from Maa Devaki to get in this world. Devas(Gods), Manushya(Human) Rakshayas(Demons) all have to come through Maa womb. Maa is the life n ray of light.

No one has come empty handed from Maa’s temple. Maa has always answered the prayers of her devotees. Maa’s has given each one of them what they deserve to get. Maa needs nothing from her devotees except few things like dedication, pureness and love.

Maa needs no elaboration, expensive preparation from us. She needs few inexpensive and common things from us. There is a saying and it has been proved also, whoever has prayed Maa and offered her a coconut on Tuesday or Saturday, Maa will fulfilled the desire of her Devotees. Many Devotees express their devotion (Bhakti) and dedication (Shardha) by organising 3 MELA (Puja) called as Maa Tarini Mela has experienced miracles which seldom people can see in this world.

No where in this world one can see such a miracle. If one gives a coconut on the name of Maa at anywhere in Orissa then it will be carried to Maa Temple without any hesitation.

Greatness and miracles of Maa needs no description in words it is an invaluable experience of an individual who has to experience it in their own SHARDHA and BHAKTI.

History of Maa:

This has happened a long back in 1475 AD when Orissa was known as Kalinga. King Purusottam Dev ruled Kalinga. Legends galore present Lord Jagannath as a friend, philosopher and guide to his devotee, be he a prince or a pauper. One legend with a delightful association with the car festival concerns King Purusottam Dev (15th century). Travelling through South India, the young king chanced to see Princess Padmavati of Kanchi, and was charmed by her beauty. He sent his emissary to her father proposing marriage. The proposal was welcomed. The minister of Kanchi proceeded to Puri to finalise the arrangements for the wedding. That was the time of the car festival. It began with the king sweeping a part of the chariot where the deity was to be placed. This signified that even the king was a humble servant of the Lord. (The custom continues to this day, the scion of the Raj family of Puri performing the rite.)

Sweeper-King (Chandal Raja)

Unfortunately, the Kanchi minister saw in it an act unworthy of a king. We cannot make a sweeper-king our son-in-law!. The king of Kanchi withdrew his consent to the marital proposal. The infuriated Purusottam Dev marched upon Kanchi, but returned defeated. He lay before Sri Jagannath for days, praying for victory or death! The Lord assured him, in his dream, that he would win on a second expedition. But with the appointment of new Senapati or commander-in –chief. Lord Jaganth advised King to look out for a house where a red flag will be flying of the rooftop. Immediately in the morning he send his troops to find out this particular house. As his dream suggested the troops found out a house of a young man name Govinda Bhanja. Govinda Bhanja plays a major of bringing Maa to Ghatagoan, Kheojhar. Govinda Bhanjha was the son of Trilochan Bhanjha the king of Kendujhar now known as kheonjar. He had abandoned his kingdom and was living in Puri as a common man. He went on to fight for king Purusottam Dev to avenge the king insult.

Journey of Maa from Kanchi to Kalinga

The journey started towards Kanchi (Vijayanagar) with Govinda Bhanjha as Senapati (Commander-in-chief). Suddenly in the forest of Vijayanagar the horse of Govinda Bhanjha refused to move further. This created curiosity in mind of Govinda Bhanjha.

He started enquiring among the tribes and was revealed that after Goddess Sita was kidnapped by demon Ravana, Lord Rama & his younger brother Lord Lakshmana started searching her. They searched in different parts of the forest. But they were not able to find Sita. Finally Lord Rama thought to worship goddess Durga in order to get the solution. He worshipped her & Goddess Durga appeared before him. The goddess told Rama not to see her, otherwise she would become stone there. But Lord Rama was not able to control himself & saw her when she appeared before him. So the goddess became stone there. Then goddess told Lord Rama not to worry, she will appear & help him when he will remember her in mind. Then Lord Rama worshipped her there. The goddess remained there in the name of ‘Tarini’.

In the forest Lord Rama only found some tribes, so he gave the responsibility of the worship of the goddess to those tribes. From that day onwards, Maa Tarini is worshipped by the Tribal people. that Maa Tarini is being worshipped there and without her acknowledgment no one can defeat King Kanchi. The famous war began and it was a very fierce battle among the Kanchi n Kalinga. God supported both sides. King Kanchi was supported by Lord Ganesha n King Purusottam Dev was by Lord Jaganth. But as we all know everything happens according to the almighty. We can never know why, how, who won n who lost. Maybe this is Maa ‘s desire to come to Kheojhar by this way. King Purusottam Dev won the war and Princess Padmavati came with King Purusottam Dev. King wanted to bring Maa along with Lord Madammohan , Raghunathjew to Puri. They prayed them to bring them. Thus they came to Kalinga or Orissa .

Journey of Maa from Puri to Ghatagoan(Kheojhar)

At that year King Trilochona Bhanja (King of Khedhujhar) died and Govinda Bhanja had to return to his kingdom. King Purusottam Dev wanted to give Govinda Bhanja something as he had helped him to avenge his insult and Princess Padvati to his kingdom. Govinda Bhanja wanted only one thing for himself .He wanted to bring Maa to his kingdom. King Purusottam Dev agreed to this and asked him to ask Maa’s permission. Govinda Bhanja prayed MAA and MAA agreed with one condition. Maa said she will go with him as long as Govinda Bhanja doesn’t look back to see Maa. With this Condition Maa went with Govinda Bhanjha to Kendujhar(kheojhar). From Puri to Khedujhar Maa horse hoof sounds were audible. On the outskirts of Khedujhar lies river Baitarini. On the forest of Kheojhar Maa’s horse hoofs was not audible to Govinda Bhanja. He got scared that Maa stayed behind and he turned to look back to see. There n then Maa turned into stone. Govinda Bhanjha prayed Maa for forgiveness but Maa said she has made the condition with him before coming. And she will stay in the wild jungle and asked Govinda Bhanjha to worship in that place. Till today Maa Tarini is being worshipped in Ghatagaon, Kheojhar. Which is now a major tourist attraction in Kheojhar (Orissa).

Every conception of life and the Universe requires a foundation to give it the necessary firm hold. This source, out of which the Universe as mind and matter has evolved, is the female spiritual Power, Shakti, who is the Great Mother of the Universe. The Goddess Shakti is the “power” which pervades the whole of the universe, and from which the Universe has emanated. There is nothing within the manifest world , which is not Shakti in its essence. The manifest world is mind and matter, that is to say, all that we call our thought, will, imagination, etc. is mind, and all the realm of nature is matter. She the Goddess is contained, in all the manifestations of the universe, but She remains, so to speak, unexhausted by being the material cause of the Universe. She in Her essence remains unaffected and greater than the entire created world.

She in her highest aspect is pure spirit or pure consciousness as such she is called Chit-Shakti but her nature and essence become apparent also in all that we are aware of through our senses. So She is matter substance too and as such She is called Maya-Shakti

The Supreme Deity is the Universal Mother or MAA as she is affectionately called by her Bakthas . MAA is Love and Compassion personified. She is full of kindness and joy . She is Karunamayi and Anandamayi. She is always on the lookout for ways and means of helping her Devotee. Unfortunately people view God or the Supreme Deity as a power who punishes the devotees for their misdeeds. But how can a mother punish her children for their misdeeds. Reprimand, warn may be , but no mother punishes her children to hurt them. When we visualise the Supreme Deity as full of Love and Compassion how can she punish her children? Since the images of MAA carry many weapons it is mistakenly believed that MAA is always angry and ready to punish her devotee.

MAA fights and vanquishes the evil forces . It clearly shows that MAA is always willing to take up arms against the evil forces to protect her Devotee. The evil forces in this modern age are many and we pray to MAA to wipe out the evil forces of this world. In the mental plane we pray to her to get rid of Anger, Lust and Greed which makes us unhappy .Rather than punishing the Devotee MAA is always on the lookout for even a semblance of goodness in her Devotee so that she can reward him. A prayer to MAA will bring us happiness.
